New Orleans House Move

There are many reasons a home becomes unwanted.  Some have fallen into disrepair; others are located on land that is being repurposed, and others do not meet the needs of the current owners.   However, many of these homes have “good bones” and materials such as hardwood floors and historic architectural detail.

Rather than tear down and add to our landfills, you can opt to donate the homes to Builders of Hope.  By doing so, they can receive a tax benefit and save money spent on demolition, but more importantly, they can provide healthy and affordable homes to individuals and families earning below the median income.  Home donation is a common sense solution that positively impacts the economic and environmental bottom line and has provided hope to 45 families since 2006.

Here’s how it works:

1. Builders of Hope will inspect the exterior of your home and the route from your property to our building site. If your house is a good candidate and the move is viable, arrangements will be made for an interior inspection.

2. To help defray the cost of moving the house, Builders of Hope will charge the homeowner a $5,000 fee. The cost is significantly less then demolition and debris removal. The homeowner is also responsible for asbestos testing and abatement, which must be done prior to the house move.

3. Once your home is accepted, a move date will be assigned. The homeowner will file an application for the demolition permit a week prior to the move date.

4. Builders of Hope will provide a Bill of Sale / Transfer of Property form for the homeowner to fill out and sign before work begins on the house move.

5. When the Bill of Sale / Transfer of Property form is faxed or returned to Builders of Hope, work on the move will be authorized. At this time, the homeowner agrees not to enter the home as the structural integrity may be altered to facilitate the move. Builders of Hope will be responsible for moving permits, labor and the preparation related to house removal, as well as making payments for the house move.

6. The homeowner will be responsible for any debris left behind once the house is removed. This may include all of the brick and the foundation, a portion of the roof (if it needs to be cut), any part of the home built on slab, and any required interior gutting.

7. Since Builders of Hope is a 501(c)3, donations are tax-deductible. The homeowner will need a recent home appraisal to file with his or her federal return. We recommend seeking advice from an accountant.

“When you see love like that put into homes, it makes a community prosper. I’m overwhelmed by it all.” – The Rev. Phil Brickle, the first homebuyer in Raleigh’s Barrington Village
